![]() |
Accordingly, Randy Parks who heads up the Computer Group (the largest
membership group) has agreed to step up to that position on an interim
basis until the next Board meeting which is Dec. 7 & 8 , 2000 at Hotel
Del Coronado, San Diego, Ca. At that time the Board will elect a new
President and Secretary-Treasurer. The primary candidates nominated
to date for the position of President is John Walker President
TFE Technology Holdings LLC from the Computer Service Group and
Mac McBride, President Red Lion Medical Safety for the Secretary-Treasurer
from the Medical Service Group for the term from 2001 to 2003. This
is also an election year of the complete Board of Directors which
will be officially elected at the next annual conference in the spring.
I would request candidates for Open Board Seats be submitted to
the nominating committee, made up of myself, the President (Randy
Parks) and the Chairman (Rich Heimann). Each Board member serves
for two years and cannot serve in the same position more than two
terms, which is 4 years.

Letter from the President
Dear SIA Members,
My term as President of SIA began with the resignation of Mark Streety
in October and will end at our Board meeting in December with the
election of a new President. I wish the incoming President the best
of luck in his or her efforts and will support them in any way I can.
I should also mention that Claudia Betzner deserves my thanks and
yours for keeping me “awake at the wheel” during these last few weeks
and for keeping me from doing too much permanent damage to the SIA.
The incoming President will naturally face challenges but the overall
health of the SIA is solid. Our membership is stable and new sponsors
are being sought out to provide additional support to the Association.
Our plans for the 2001 Conference in Las Vegas are on track and it
should be at least one of the best if not the best conference we’ve
ever had. Our discussions with other associations such as AFSMI and
IAMERS have already produced positive results and are ongoing. And
last but certainly not least our efforts on the legal front have been
encouraging as you will read elsewhere in this newsletter. While all
this is exciting there is still much room for growth and improvement.
How much we achieve is to a large extent dependant on you – SIA Members.
The Board needs to hear from you if there are things the Association
can do to make your business more successful. We would welcome any
input you can provide. Is there a new benefit we can offer? A particular
speaker or topic you’d like to see at the conference? Things you think
the SIA should be doing but isn’t? Think about it and let us know.
We could also use some assistance in signing up new sponsors for the Association. Is there a vendor you do business with that is not currently involved with SIA? If you don’t see them advertised in this newsletter the odds are they’re not involved as a sponsor. You don’t have to sell them on it – just pass a name and phone number on to Claudia or a Board member. Any help you can provide will be appreciated.
And lastly, we have Board elections taking place at the next Conference. If you or anyone you know would be a good candidate for serving on the Board please come forward and make a nomination.
In closing, I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday season and the best for the coming year.
Randy Parks
President

Legal Update
CSU V. Xerox - SIA's brief has been requested by the Supreme
Court, the Solicitor General, one of the most qualified legal minds
in the land, has been ask to provide a brief on whether the Supreme
Court should hear the case and the Clinton administration has been
ask to provide input. It is suspected the brief will be completed
in the next 30 days and may make a decision in January prior to the
new administration inauguration. This would be good news for SIA.
According to Ron Katz, the General Counsel for Service Industry Association,
who wrote the brief, “I think we have a better than average chance
the Supreme Court will hear this case and rule positive for CSU.
Finally, in the State Farm case, a final decision is expected by yearend.
In a related aftermarket parts case in California, the state has ruled
Illinois does not have the authority to overturn a previous law in
California which allows generic parts.
