IT
and medical technology set to converge in the hospital of the
future Julian M. Goldman, MD Departments of Anesthesia and Biomedical
Engineering
Massachusetts General Hospital
For some time
there has been a growing sense of anxiety about the escalating
burden of healthcare costs on individuals, businesses and government.
More recently, a series of reports from the prestigious Institute
of Medicine (IOM) has raised questions about the quality of care,
with a resulting "diagnosis" that the industry needs
a complete makeover incorporating more modern business practices
and the power of the latest communication and information systems
into the business offices as well as clinical practice.
What factors
will shape the time frame of these changes, and what will be the
business opportunities associated will this transition, as information
technology converges with medical technology. What will the hospital
of the future look like? These questions and the associated implications
will be addressed in the presentation. |
